Now you've decided that this could be the career change for you, what do you do next?  An important step is to get the word out there that you're starting your freelance business-word of mouth is one of the most effective and inexpensive form of advertising.  Make a list of people you've done business with from both within and outside your field of expertise. You'll be surprised at how many more people require your service just from within your own circle.

The internet can be a challenging but lucrative means of finding new contracts and clients. if you know what to do  Care must be taken to make sure the experience is not a financially draining one.  You can post ads  on one of the many free classified sites,  build your web page and market your site or sign up on a Freelance Auction site.  Buyer beware as advertising on the internet can be an expensive and not always productive way of getting your name out there.

Contractor or Employee? PDF Print E-mail

One of the most difficult issues for Freelancers or Contractors as well as the Client who hires them, is the distinction by CRA as well as the Provincial Ministry’s in your respective areas as to whether or not you qualify as a Contractor in business for yourself or are deemed an Employee.  The CRA has become more diligent in their targeting of Contractors and have been known in recent years to recalculate prior years Tax returns.  There are benefits for both parties of this Business relationship so if due diligence is administered when negotiating your contract, if and when the CRA come calling, you should sleep easy!

My name is Sharon and I have had 25 plus years experience in the Accounting field.  I began as a Payroll Clerk when there was no such thing  as computerized labor tracking-that's right.  Time Cards!  I moved from there to general accounting and became Controller of an Ontario manufacturer which included HR, Office management and Network administration.  I'm sure many of you can identify with that-industry today is not made up of many large industries but small to medium size ones that require the wearing of many hats

I left being a 9 to 5'er and moved into the Freelance sector and haven't looked back.  Many companies today are looking for freelance contractors in many areas.  Downsizing,  rising benefit costs. legal requirements on the Employee/Employer relationship all contribute to the popularity of hiring Freelancers.

I'm sure there are many of us out there who find ourselves in the later years of our careers, either looking for a change or being caught in the midst of downsizing.  About a year ago, I found myself in such a position.  A Controller and Human Resource Manager by trade, I soon realized that there was a growing market for Freelance Bookkeepers and the rest is history.  Bookkeeping is something that not all companies need on a full time basis and good ones seem to be difficult to find.

The same is true for Human Resources, Sales Consulting, Turn Around Specialists and Project Managers-more and more companies are looking for cost effective approaches to bring that kind of expertise on board without the exposure of hiring on a permanent basis. I’ve found most of my business by word of mouth and was fortunate enough to be referred by an Accounting Firm to many of my clients. I truly enjoy the freedom that Freelance work brings-being able to work from home, setting my own hours, working with a variety of companies has made it rewarding.
